July 24, 2018 – Status on Over the Counter (OTC) Hearing Aids
In the FDA Reauthorization Act of 2017 (FDARA), Congress outlined certain requirements to establish a category of over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids and the requirements that apply to them. This statutorily mandated process requires FDA to publish proposed regulations for public comment, and then to publish final regulations.

- The commission may hold hearings, take testimony, and receive evidence in the course of carrying out its duties. 4021) If a furnisher of credit information provides an accommodation to a consumer affected by the COVID-19 outbreak, and the consumer complies with the terms of the accommodation, the creditor generally must report the account.
At this time, there are no products that can claim to address hearing loss that are, or can claim to be OTC hearing aids within the meaning of section 520(q) of the FD&C Act as amended by FDARA. Currently, hearing aids continue to be restricted devices, for which sales must follow applicable federal and state requirements. FDA has published a letter to clarify the status of these products.

Having trouble hearing? Over 35 million children and adults in the United States have some degree of hearing loss. Hearing loss can have a negative effect on communication, relationships, school/work performance, and emotional well-being. However, hearing loss doesn't have to restrict your daily activities. Properly fitted hearing aids and aural rehabilitation (techniques used to identify and diagnose hearing loss, and implement therapies for patients who are hard of hearing, including using amplification devices to aid the patient's hearing abilities), can help in many listening situations. Aural rehabilitation helps a person focus on adjusting to their hearing loss and the use of their hearing aids. It also explores assistive devices to help improve communication. Most people who are hearing-impaired will need two hearing aids as both ears may be affected by hearing loss, though some people may only need one hearing aid.
This site includes information on the difference between hearing aids, intended for use by people with hearing loss, and sound amplifiers for consumers with no hearing loss who want to make environmental sounds louder for recreational use. While the FDA regulates hearing aids, which are medical devices, it does not consider sound amplifiers to be medical devices when labeled for recreational or other use by individuals with normal hearing. However, certain safety regulations related to sound output levels still apply to these products.
Recently, the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST), and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NAS) issued reports recommending ways to improve the access and affordability of hearing aids. The FDA considered these recommendations along with input from the public and has issued the 'Immediately in Effect Guidance Document: Conditions for Sale for Air-Conduction Hearing Aids' guidance document. The FDA issued this guidance to communicate that it does not intend to enforce certain conditions for sale applicable to hearing aids for users 18 years of age or older.
This site provides general information on hearing aids and their benefits, types of hearing loss, other products and procedures to improve hearing, and a checklist of steps to remember and consider before purchasing hearing aids. For this assignment you are going to read the popular short story, “The Fun They Had,” by Isaac Asimov in 1951. 1951! That was just about 70 years ago. Asimov envisioned this futuristic society back then and I can not wait to read what you have to say about this story. I wonder if you will notice any similarities between your experience and the characters’? I hope you enjoy this short story and find the irony in this assignment.

Rabbit Rabbit!
On the first of every month, you may hear people saying “rabbit, rabbit.” According to superstition, the saying is meant to give you good luck, if you say it on the first day of the month before midday. Even if it doesn’t work, it’s still a fun thing to do.
I am told that I have a habit of leaving the doors of my cupboards open. My family members find random cupboard doors open in the kitchen when the come downstairs in the morning. I always try to make sure they are closed before I go to bed, but, ever now and then, one or two will be open. Some are all the way open at times or some are just open a crack. It is a really bizzare event that I can not explain. Could have I done it? Of course? Did I do it? Good question. Could someone be playing a trick on me? Could be… Nevertheless, the mystery continues and, now, my family looks for the open cupboards in the morning and laugh when they find them.
Your assignment is to read the short story, “Open Window,” by the British author Saki and answer the questions.

Memorial Day is on Monday 5/25. Here is a little history about the day:
Memorial Day, as Decoration Day gradually came to be known, originally honored only those lost while fighting in the Civil War. But during World War I the United States found itself embroiled in another major conflict, and the holiday evolved to commemorate American military personnel who died in all wars, including World War II, the Vietnam War, the Korean War, the War in Iraq, and the War in Afghanistan.
For decades, Memorial Day continued to be observed on May 30, the date Logan had selected for the first Decoration Day. But in 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May in order to create a three-day weekend for federal employees; the change went into effect in 1971. The same law also declared Memorial Day a federal holiday.

Using the Venn Diagram provided, list the ideas or facts the are unique to that article in the outer circles. Next, where the circles overlap, list the ideas or facts that the articles have in common.
Finally, choose one common similarity or difference between the two articles and write an essay about it.

As you may or may not know, I absolutely love Star Wars. I saw the first Star Wars in the backseat of my parents’ car at a drive in movie theater in 1979. That experience started an obsession in me and I celebrate May 4th as Star Wars day. So if you are looking for something to do, and you haven’t seen them or haven’t watched them in awhile, may I suggest the Star Wars movies or television series.
Unfortunately, I could not find any articles about Star Wars that are relevant to our class (Don’t worry, I am still searching). Instead, I would like us to look back at the first woman to race in the Boston Marathon. The Boston Marathon would have been held on April 15. However, due to the coronavirus, the Marathon is rescheduled to September 14th of this year. The first woman to run the marathon was Kathrine Switzer in 1967. Fifty years later, she ran it again. Her example courage and determination is something we can all learn from.

Welcome back! I hope that you were able to decompress over the last week. I know that things have been stressful, but you are surviving and thriving. This week assignment is about the great Michael Jordan. He is, arguably, the greatest basketball player in history. His story is one of perseverance, determination, and a winning mind-set. I had the privilege of seeing him play live when I was a teenager. It was something to behold. Now, being locked inside almost everyday (thanks, weather, really helping us out here), I have been able to watch the new documentary series about Jordan and watch old games and relive the amazement that I felt when I was a teen. Michael Jordan transformed basketball, US popular culture, and African American history. However, it a came with a price . . . sacrifice. Jordan experienced failure way before he became a success and an icon. I will be extremely interested to see what your takes about MJ are.

This is your last assignment before April vacation. Can you believe that it April vacation is here already? This assignment is all about you and your family. A coat of arms is a symbol that represents a specific family or person. Originally appearing on shields or flags, coats of arms were once used as a way of distinguishing one knight from another on a battlefield. It’s about creativity, symbolism, heritage, and a statement about who you or your family are.
Read the article, “How to Create Your Own Coat of Arms.”
After reading the article choose one of the following:
Google search (with permission if necessary) your family’s coat of arms. There is a good chance that you have one and, if you don’t, you are not alone. There are many names that do not have a coat of arms. Just type in the search bar your last name and “coat of arms.” Do some digging (reading) about where your family’s coat of arms came from and what it means. Then, create your own family’s modern coat of arms. Use meaningful symbols and colors in your design and explain what they mean to you. Follow the directions in the article to help you along. Send me a picture of it. Maybe I can find someway we can showcase all of them.
OR
Create your own personal coat of arms. The coat of arms that you design should be about you. Different symbols that are used should represent who you are. Good morning! I hope that you had a wonderful and interesting weekend. I recently watched the new Trolls movie (my son is 6 years old, folks) and I could not help but to have the songs from the movie stuck in my head. It got me wondering. . . Why do certain songs (or parts of songs) get stuck in our heads? It can be torturous at times. I can’t tell you how long it took me to get “Baby Shark” out of my head. Do you have the song running through your head right now? Is it stuck in there on repeat? If so, you may have interest in this explanation of what happens.

Back to the Future is one of my favorite movies of all time. If you have not seen it yet, do so. There are three movies in all, but the original is by far the best. I always wondered if I would ever be able to see a car fly, never mind travel back in time. I saw this movie when it came out in 1986 when I was 10 years old. It is really funny to see the technology used in the movie and what we have now. If you haven’t noticed yet, the theme for this week is time travel, McFly! “So why don’t you make like a tree, and get out of here” and read our second article of the week.

Good morning and happy new week! I don’t know about you, but I think the days are starting to move faster. Maybe I am starting to get used to the “new normal.” I’m not sure, but I still struggle with getting used to how we have been living. I hope that you are all safe and healthy. I know that you want to get outside and see your friends in person. Please, keep to the social distancing rules when you go out (it supposed to be a warm week). Just because it is warm does not mean that there is not the threat of becoming sick, so, please, be careful and be smart. I know that you can!

Greetings, everyone! Believe it or not it is a new week! It seems like our calendar days now consist of “yesterday,” “today,” and “tomorrow.” I hope you are all staying safe and healthy. All is good in the MacNeil homestead. Some days go by quickly while others seem to drag on. I would like to hear what you are all up to, so I am working on learning of a way to make that happen. It’s funny. You all know that I am not a fan of social media, but because of our “social distancing” I have been forced to explore these options. It’s good to grow and learn new things. I hope you are taking the opportunity to learn something that interests you during this time.
Did you know that the entire month of March is Women’s History Month? If not, now you are aware. According with the theme of this month, I would like you to read an article of a woman named Victoria Woodhull. She is a true trailblazer in American History and an enormous influence in the Women’s Right Movement (also known as the Women’s Suffrage Movement).
